Loans on OAS Canada: 7 Smart Facts to Avoid a July Shock

Loans on OAS Canada lenders assess hinge on a deposit that resets twice — quarterly by inflation, and every July by your tax return. Here is what changes.

Loans on OAS Canada lenders approve are assessed on one thing: the deposit sitting in your bank statement. What almost no article mentions is that Old Age Security is the only income a lender ever reads that gets reset twice — quarterly by inflation indexing, and once a year, every July, by your tax return. Get caught on the wrong side of the July reset and the deposit a lender sees is not the deposit you were expecting.

Quick answer

Old Age Security qualifies as income at most licensed lenders. The cost is fixed by law — $14 per $100 advanced, the federal maximum since January 1, 2025 — so shopping between licensed payday lenders on price is pointless. What matters for loans on OAS Canada wide is the size of the deposit and its stability, and both move: OAS is re-indexed every quarter, and GIS is recalculated every July from your prior-year return. Miss a tax filing and GIS stops without warning.

Loans on OAS Canada: the deposit changes four times a year

OAS is indexed quarterly to the Consumer Price Index — January, April, July and October. Amounts never fall when prices fall, but they do step up several times a year, which means a lender's standard "last 90 days of bank statements" always contains a slightly stale picture.

For the July to September 2026 quarter:

Drag to view table
BenefitMaximum monthly amount
OAS pension, age 65–74$751.97
OAS pension, age 75+$827.17
GIS, single / widowed / divorced$1,123.17
OAS + GIS combined, single, 65–74$1,875.14
OAS + GIS combined, single, 75+$1,950.34

That was a 1.2% rise for the quarter and 2.3% over the year from July 2025, first paid on July 29, 2026. OAS lands on the third-to-last business day of each month, which is also the date any repayment should be scheduled against.

Why the July reset breaks loans on OAS Canada applications

Here is the mechanism nobody explains to seniors, and it is the single most useful thing on this page.

GIS, the Allowance and the Allowance for the Survivor are income-tested every year and renewed each July, using the income reported on your previous year's tax return. Service Canada pulls that figure from the Canada Revenue Agency automatically. You do not reapply.

But if the return was never filed, there is no figure to pull — and GIS simply stops in July. No letter, no warning, just an absent deposit. In one commonly cited year roughly 4% of GIS renewals were suspended for exactly this reason.

Two consequences follow, and both matter more than any lending question:

  • Retroactive GIS is capped at 11 months. A filing gap longer than that means benefits you were entitled to are permanently gone.
  • A stopped GIS looks, to a lender, like income collapse. Your statements show a deposit falling from roughly $1,875 to $752 with no explanation. That is a decline, not an underwriting quirk.

If your deposit dropped this July, file the return before you apply for anything. The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program runs free clinics across Canada for exactly this situation, and filing a nil return still works — the filing is the trigger, not the income.

What loans on OAS Canada can legally be worth

Ontario limits a single payday loan to 50% of net income — net income, which includes benefit income. Applied to real numbers, the advertised ceiling disappears:

Drag to view table
SituationMonthly depositOntario maximum single loanFee at $14/$100
OAS only, 65–74$751.97$375.98$52.64
OAS only, 75+$827.17$413.58$57.90
OAS + GIS, single, 65–74$1,875.14$937.57$131.26
OAS + GIS, single, 75+$1,950.34$975.17$136.52

A page promising "up to $1,500 on OAS" is describing a product that cannot legally be sold to an OAS-only pensioner in Ontario. Treat that as a freshness test on the whole page — as is any site still quoting $15 or $17 per $100, which were provincial caps superseded by the federal 14% ceiling on January 1, 2025.

If your GIS stopped this July, do this before you borrow

A stopped supplement is a paperwork problem wearing the costume of a money problem, and taking one of the loans on OAS Canada lenders advertise at $14 per $100 to bridge it is the most expensive way to solve it. Work through this instead:

  1. Confirm the cause. Sign in to My Service Canada Account, or call 1-800-277-9914, and ask whether the renewal was completed. Nine times in ten the answer is a missing tax return.
  2. File the return immediately — even a nil return. The filing is the trigger, not the income. A senior with no taxable income still has to file for GIS to renew.
  3. Use a free clinic if cost or complexity is the barrier. The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program runs free tax clinics across Canada specifically for low-income filers and seniors.
  4. Ask about the 11-month limit. Retroactive GIS is capped at eleven months. If the gap is approaching a year, this is urgent in a way that a missed deposit does not feel.
  5. Ask your province about a bridge. Provincial seniors' supplements, utility arrears programs and municipal emergency funds exist for exactly this gap and are not repayable.

Only after those five steps should borrowing enter the conversation — and by then the deposit that supports the application will often have been restored anyway, with arrears attached.

The recovery tax shrinks the deposit for a full year

The OAS recovery tax — the clawback — applies to net world income between $95,323 and $154,708 for ages 65 to 74, with the upper limit at $160,647 for ages 75 and over, at a rate of 15% on income above the lower threshold.

Most payday borrowers are nowhere near it. But the mechanism is worth knowing because of how it is collected: rather than a bill, the amount is recovered by reducing your monthly OAS payments starting the following July, for twelve months. A one-off spike in income — a property sale, a large RRSP withdrawal, a lump-sum pension payment — therefore produces a smaller OAS deposit for a whole year afterwards.

If that is you, the deposit a lender reads is genuinely lower than the published maximum, and it is not a mistake to correct. It is the number they should be underwriting.

OAS is protected. Your chequing account is not.

Old Age Security Act, section 36(1) is unambiguous: a benefit "shall not be assigned, charged, attached, anticipated or given as security," and any transaction purporting to do so is void. Benefits are also exempt from seizure and execution.

No lender can garnish your OAS. It does not need to. A pre-authorized debit is not a seizure — it is an instruction you gave your own bank, and it clears against whatever is in the account on the day it runs, regardless of where that money came from. The statutory protection attaches to the benefit in transit, not to the balance after it lands.

That is why, for a pensioner, the repayment date is the control that matters. Schedule the debit for the day after the deposit clears, never the same day.

The five-minute OAS file to build before you apply

Assemble this once and it works for every application:

  1. Your latest Service Canada benefit statement, showing the current quarterly amount.
  2. Proof your tax return is filed — a Notice of Assessment or a CRA "proof of income statement."
  3. Three months of bank statements showing the OAS deposit landing on the third-to-last business day.
  4. A written note of your next three deposit dates. Lenders schedule debits from this.
  5. Your 50% ceiling, calculated. If an offer exceeds it, the lender is either unlicensed or counting income you do not have.
  6. One phone call to a credit union first. A long, clean deposit history at one institution is exactly what they price on, and it is the cheapest money available to most pensioners.

The bottom line

Old Age Security is one of the most bankable incomes in the country — indexed, guaranteed and paid on a fixed schedule. The risk in loans on OAS Canada lenders write is not approval. It is that the deposit itself moves: quarterly with inflation, annually with your tax return, and for twelve months at a time if the recovery tax applies. File the return, know the reset date, borrow against the number on the statement rather than the number in the advertisement, and price a credit union before you pay $14 per $100.
